Education programmes

"The best visit to our school ever, a great experience for us all"

Higham ferres Junior School Northampton Nov 2004

Beats-working work with pupils from primary education through to University level. We provide one-off workshops, residencies and on-going tuition. School-based programmes are both fun and accessible while offering a highly effective way to develop musicianship and intercultural understanding.

"Our African Drumming workshop led by Steve Haden was
really good fun. All the children were engaged
throughout  - even those with disruptive tendencies!
We enjoyed learning about the background to the
rhythms we learnt, and how they are  used in African
tribes. Three groups of children of differing ages and
abilities learnt different things, and we performed
them to each other at the end of the morning. I'm
trying to find a good excuse to get Steve back
again"...

Shetland News

A drumming workshop was held at the Lerwick Boating Club on Saturday and Sunday. Steve Haden leads the class of African drummers.

LERWICK Boating Club was positively vibrating at the weekend with up to 35 people playing African drums at one time during a big teaching event.

Visiting teacher Steve Haden from Kirriemuir, who runs the Drum Village festival in Scotland, gave classes for organiser Joy Duncan's local group and also ran open workshops for newcomers.

Ms Duncan described it as "a pretty happening, intensive weekend which has brought us up to another level".

She said the Shetland group was the fourth in Scotland that Mr Haden had taken under his wing and he is excited about linking up regularly in future.

Ms Duncan said: "It means we have a connection with the drumming world in Scotland and it opens up lots of possibilities."

Among these could be linking up with Mr Haden's touring band.
